Making the Most of a Day at the Del Mar Races
Be a part of a classic and decades-old tradition by simply stepping inside the gates of the Del Mar Racetrack and placing a bet or two. Watch the top racehorses, jockeys, and trainers light up the scene with passion and high energy. Grab a beverage and walk around to simply enjoy the sights that come with a day at the track. Most importantly, be sure to take a look at the numerous events held at the Del Mar Racetrack, as you’re bound to find something that is right down your alley — a great reason to mark your calendar and commit to making the trip.
You’ve got until September 5th to pick a date and be off to the races! So make it count, and make a day out of it! Here is a list of some events worth looking into while the races are still here:
Summer Concert Series:
From Ziggy Marley to Chris Young, the concerts held at the racetrack’s Seaside Stage provide for an exciting end to a day at the races. Keep an eye out for a band or performer coming up that you can jam to after making a few bets. All you have to do is make it into the racetrack before the last race starts, and admission is free to every concert!
Cabana Fridays and Free & Easy Wednesdays:
Free & Easy Wednesday says it all in the name! Every Wednesday, save some cash by getting free Stretch Run Admission and a free program. But it doesn’t end there… domestic draft beers, regular soda, and regular hot dogs provided at the Stretch Run Concession Stands are all half price as well! So if you’re looking to check out the race scene without spending too much, Wednesdays are the day to get to those gates.
Kids Free Family Weekends:
Every Saturday and Sunday, the infield at the Horse Races turns into a family fun spot with free activities for the kids. Not to mention, admission into the racetrack for the event is a steal — kids get in free and adults only pay $6! It is the perfect activity for the kiddos and their parents on a sunny afternoon. So take advantage of it because there aren’t many opportunities where families can enjoy activities and games as horses take laps around them!
The Del Mar Racetrack knows how to please all kinds of tastes. Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth, salty tooth, or a somewhere between, there is sure to be a food event with your name on it — and these foods do not disappoint. Soon to be hosted at the races this season will be The Chili Cookoff, Tacotopia, Donuts Day, Pizza & Beer Festival and more! Arrive at the event with an empty stomach and you’ll leave as a happy camper my friends.
Classic Car Show:
Coming up on Saturday, August 6th, the Seaside Concert area is going to be flooded with some of the coolest old-school whips you’ll ever see. I think we can all agree that catching a glimpse of a classic car is a pretty sweet feeling — so imagine seeing dozens all at once! Big Fin Cadillacs, 47-47 Mercury’s, 31-39 roadsters, and more… including a special appearance of a world famous vehicle that any car-lover won’t want to miss.
TVG Pacific Classic:
As Del Mar’s signature event, this one may be more of an attraction to all those horse race enthusiasts out there. It is known as Del Mar’s most prestigious and priciest race. But don’t worry because it’s on the same day as the Pizza & Beer Festival — so beer connoisseurs and pizza lovers will be pleased to make a trip to the track on Saturday, August 20th as well.
Whether you’re an avid Del Mar Horse Races attendee or jumping into the vibrant scene for the first time, the racing season in Del Mar provides and environment for anyone to join in on the fun. Turf Club members, race enthusiasts, event goers, and first-timers are all encouraged to set aside a day for the races.
Good luck out there, have fun, and enjoy the scene!
