Holiday Gift Ideas for Her

The holiday season has officially arrived, and gift shopping crunch-time will be upon us before we know it. Most agree that finding the right gift for a lady can be a challenge — but we can’t forget that thought and effort truly go a long way. After all, you know your beloved lady best, so trust your gut and her appreciation will shine brightly. Whether you’ve got something in mind or you’re on the lookout for some holiday shopping inspiration, these great gift ideas will guide you towards making a purchase you and your special lady will be very happy about.

For the Fashionista

You may argue that fashion is not your forte, but a little research in this area won’t hurt. Find out if there’s a trending new piece of apparel or jewelry that you know would fit in with your lady’s wardrobe. If she ever points out an item she especially adores, take note! Ultimately, you’ll be surprised with how easily you’ll notice when an accessory or clothing item screams her name. There are a few directions you can go when finding the perfect gift for an artist. These options may also work well for an art enthusiast or collector. Those who appreciate any type of masterpiece would love a personalized piece that will look nice in their home. If you want to share an experience instead, consider buying tickets to a local gallery. If your lady loves to create her own work, provide frames that will bring her art to life.

For the Beauty Expert

It’s pretty easy to know whether or not your special lady is a beauty aficionado. If that’s who you’re working with, you may want to visit a local beauty shop to get some expertise on the latest must-haves in that department. Another great option is to purchase a salon package to her favorite place of pampering where she can have a relaxing day to herself. If you’re really on top of things, you may already have an idea of what she has been wanting on her makeup counter, which will make the gift shopping a little easier.

Most may agree that both aspiring and professional cooks can always add something to their kitchen. Maybe they’ve been needing to replace a few cooking essentials or are hoping to score a new and improved version of their most frequently used cookware. All cooks will appreciate a personalized or unique cookbook for inspiration. Maybe your cook loves a good wine pairing. If you know their favorite pairings, provide their desired beverages.

Try to find an essential piece of equipment for their type of adventure or accessories and clothing items they’ve been dying to add to their travel pack. Picking a piece of furniture or decor for a lady who loves designing her home may be tough. However, with the right approach, you won’t disappoint. By sticking to small accent pieces that you know fit her taste and style, your gift won’t risk the chance of being too bold.

Keep in mind, there’s nothing wrong with asking for simple hints on what your loved one may be hoping for this holiday season. Just be sure to leave room for an element of surprise! It’s also not a bad idea to consider adding a stocking stuffer or two. Gift cards or small pieces of jewelry in her stocking can be a nice addition to whatever else you have wrapped up and under the tree.

The shops mentioned above are only a few of the best local holiday shopping picks from the design district. Stroll down the street to find out what individual stores may have to offer for the holiday season. Florals – Florals are a big trend this season! A range of pretty flower patterns are showing up on any piece of apparel from shirts and dresses to leggings and even jeans — and we’re not complaining. It’s a great way to add color to a simple look!

Ruffles – Remember when ruffles were your favorite part of clothing when you were young? Well, it’s about time we bring back the fun style this look creates. One or two strips of ruffles can be just enough to accomplish this trendy look.

Off-the-shoulder – Everyone’s favorite 70s trend is making a strong comeback. Off-the-shoulder shirts and dresses create a fashionable look while showing off the perfect amount of skin. We especially love this one because it puts a little “party” in any outfit!

Chokers – Yes, the choker is back… but it’s more chic and stylish than ever. How could we not throw this one in the mix? From simple and sleek to stringy and hip, chokers are a great addition to any fall outfit.

Here’s the best part: if you’ve got some spare time while waiting for the shuttle going to the event or the train going home, what better way to let time pass than with a pint of beer, glass of wine, or a bite to eat? Right across the street from the station here on Cedros are some perfect spots to visit while waiting on shuttles and trains! Beer lovers can find tasty beverages at Culture Brewing Co., while wine lovers can find them at Carruth Cellars. Summer Style: Flattering Swimsuits to Inspire and More!

It’s time to say goodbye to June Gloom and hello to summer sunshine. The sun is coming in hot, and we all know what comes along with it — beach days and swimwear! Whether you’re sticking around in the SoCal sunshine or planning trips to other sunny summer spots, weekends and holidays should be spent soaking up the sun at the beach or by the pool. As foyellow bikinir the ultimate summer necessity, be sure to make a little time to shop for the perfect swimsuit.

Don’t be afraid to show some skin and bring style to the sand with confidence. Swimwear has come a long way over the years — and it’s a beautiful thing. Finding what complements your shape and style has never been easier. It’s not a bad problem to have when the toughest part is choosing from a number of trending styles! To help get you started, here are a few that are killing the swimsuit game so far in 2016:

High-waisted Two Piece

We’re excited to share that this retro-style is coming on the scene faster than ever, ladies. Right alongside your high-waisted pants and shorts, the high-wasted bikini has returned by popular demand. Whether it’s cut out with strappy sides, shaped with sheer mesh, or solid and bold, the look itself has a variety of styles that can flatter any body type. If you think the high-waisted look is just not your thing, think again and you may find something that works for you!

Mix and Matchbright dummer bikini

While most assume this refers to different suits that complement each other in colors and patterns, the mix and match style is now catering to size and shape as well. When it comes to mixing and matching by color and pattern, you essentially have the power to turn two bathing suits into four — and who wouldn’t want to take advantage of that? For those of us who require a different size bottom versus top, saving money is where it’s at. Retailers have come to realize the necessity of selling bathing suit pieces separately, hallelujah! Some shops even specifically target those who need to mix their sizes. For example, take a look at this small boutique here on Cedros Ave. that has a variety of swimsuits, Strawberry Intimates. So whether you’re aiming to rock different suits in multiple configurations or looking to accommodate and support your particular body type, the mix and match style is a great 2016 trend for inspiration.

One-Piece Wonders
To go along with our theme, the one-piece is another look that presents a number of style varieties ranging from slitted and sexy to simplistic and chic. It’s a timeless and classy style that won’t be leaving us anytime soon. You may be looking for either flirty spice or for elegant coverage, but don’t hesitate to give both a try. You never know what may surprisingly show you off best! While browsing the numerous styles, one-piece shoppers will come across ‘Baywatch’ high hipbone cuts, extremely low backs, and cut-out sides — all made from many different materials. It’s looking like the latest   monokini versions (which might as well be a two-piece type of one-piece) are especially becoming a favorite 2016 summer choice.

Complementary Essentials

4 Home Decor Trends We LOVE for 2016

If you’re a regular Cedros Avenue shopper, you’re aware of the awesome home decor shopping selection we have. There are so many, in fact, it’s hard NOT to shop for a little something new every season to complement your interior space. Home decor is an extension of fashion, and as such, at times you’ll only need a new accessory or two (a new lamp or fabulous rug), or you’ll need an entirely new outfit for a specific room (example: fabulous bedding with a plethora of matching pillows). Hey, there’s nothing wrong with livening up your living space — it’s your sanctuary! With that in mind, we thought it might be fun to share a few of the 2016 Houzz home decorating trends that we found inspiring, and hope you will too.

Formal Dining Room Spaces

Farmhouse Dining Room

We love that this trend has come back into focus. Formal dining rooms fell by the wayside in recent decades due to the hustle and bustle that is just, life. But in recent years, we’ve finally come full circle back to actually needing to connect with one another, and what better way to do that than around the dinner table? No longer reserved for holidays exclusively, formal dining rooms have finally become a nightly gathering space for many families. But they’ve morphed with the times into being more functional and ideal for regular daily use, such as reclaimed farm tables mixed stylishly with benches and coordinating seating. And if you need some accessories, head on over the Bixby & Ball to outfit your dining abode.

Statement Mirrors…in Bathrooms!

Large mirror in Cokas Diko Solana Beach

This is such a great usage of framed mirrors. More and more we’re seeing bathrooms that are utilizing beautiful statement mirrors in place of single-paned reflectors that span an entire wall. You can get really creative with this style! We’ve seen everything from large mirrors with bold, antique wood frames, to a mixture of smaller more simplistic mirrors to complement a bathroom space. Love this trend? Cokas Diko and Solo are great places to hunt for statement mirrors.

Outdoor Fabrics Used Indoors

Houzz Image Outdoor Fabric Used Indoor

How fun and smart is this?! If you have a family that includes animals, this is a fantastic idea. Outdoor fabrics are sturdy and meant to not only withstand outdoor weather conditions but are easy to clean. Both big time bonus points if you have a dog (or 2 or 3) that come bounding about on your couches after a long day at the beach or after a trail run. Whether you’re in need of sturdier fabrics or not, the other bonus to this trend is versatility. Outdoor fabrics present a slightly different feel and also offer bolder patterns and color choices. We’re seeing this trend translate minimally with throw pillows and dining chair seats, but also on a grander level with couches and lounge chairs. So if you see an outdoor pillow you love, keep in mind that it could still be an option to compliment a love seat for a pop of color this spring and summer.

Tech Free Living Rooms

Cokas Diko Furniture in Solana Beach

Along the lines of the above-mentioned formal dining space trend, is that need to gather face-to-face and connect with one another. Living spaces that omit all technology screens are on the rise (aka no T.V.) and for good reason. Going back to basics, these spaces are meant for good conversation and maybe even family game nights (Scrabble anyone?). The point here is to create a space that allows us to connect with the people in our lives. Even if you’re craving a solitary evening to yourself, what better way to unwind than with a good book, a glass of wine, and some silence? Replacing televisions with artwork or a featured gallery wall of family photos is a trend to get on board with. We need to get back to the basics of human interaction and relationships. And hey, it’s ok if your book is on a tablet device. But turn that mobile phone on silent!

Buying Art: For Love, Investment, or Both?

Thinking about investing in some artwork? Be it a painting or some sort of media art (i.e. sculpture), there are several reasons people purchase art. If you have your eye on a piece, are you planning to buy for love, investment, or both?

Art is subjective first and foremost. Even those who choose to invest have to be inspired or moved by the artworks they purchase, and perhaps even the artists themselves. But, when we purchase artwork that moves us in any way, we often wonder whether or not the value will extend beyond intrinsic — especially if the artwork is original and the price tag is high. As we have several art shops here on Cedros Ave., we thought we’d weigh in and provide some insight on this topic.

Buying Art as an Investment

If you’re curious about the investment aspect of art buying here are some interesting facts to note about art sales. In 2014, patrons spent more than $60 billion on art. This is up 67% from 2009, showing that art lovers are becoming more and more interested in making purchases. The 2014 Deloitte Art & Finance Report notes that 75% of those art buyers said they were purchasing their pieces as an investment.

If you are considering becoming one of those art buyers, think about why you are planning to buy. Are you in love with the piece, or are you planning this purchase as an investment? As you ponder this question, factor in these four things:

1. Avoid the hype: Only works by a few artists in any period will generate big profits when you try to sell. If you get caught up in the hype, you could fall into a dangerous pattern, hoping to purchase artwork before an artist is ‘discovered’ and then sell it once he or she becomes a hit. These situations are actually very rare.

2. Do your homework: Before you purchase, make sure to determine the fair market value of the art. Work with a reputable art advisor to find the sale prices of similar works, or check the prices at auction houses. You also want to learn about the artist. The information can help provide you with context when, or if, you decide to invest.

3. Don’t believe in myths: Just because an artist is selling a number of pieces, this does not automatically mean that they are valuable. Don’t assume that since you are buying from an up and coming artist, you are headed for a windfall.

4. Value your collection: If you do acquire a collection, remember to have the collection appraised. This is an especially good idea if you are making a will or planning to give to charity.

Buying Art for the Love of It

We’ll just state for the record, that we’re not advocating one reason over the other for purchasing art. After all, art is subjective and is ultimately meant to inspire. Regardless of your motivation, you should buy art that you do in fact, love. If it just so happens that you also support the artist themselves in their endeavors, even better. If you are purchasing art for the mere love of it, we will say there is less pressure in regards to whether or not it will increase in dollar value. You will, however, be gaining a piece that has intrinsic value, which can be equally as important depending on what motivates you and your lifestyle.

Take Your Senses on a Little Trip To France

Mistral Solana Beach storefront

The French have so many of the finer things in life down to a natural science, from fine art to opulent fashion, exquisite cuisine and picturesque landscape that offers what might be one of the most inspirational backdrops known throughout history — France embodies all that is just lovely in the world.

While we may live in another desirable little corner of this planet (Solana Beach), traveling outside of our backyard allows us to experience different cultures, see new ways of life, and just take in the incredible panorama of the world around us. We take these moments in with our senses; sight, touch, smell, taste. All of which can register a memorable moment in our lives that we somehow never forget.

Focus for a moment on your sense of smell.

Think of a scent that makes you smile, brings you a sense of calm, or perhaps reminds you of a moment or person that fills your heart with nostalgia and happiness. Today we’re inviting you to take your senses on a little trip to France right here on Cedros Avenue to an elegantly charming little store that can do just that, called Mistral.

Whether you’ve had the opportunity to travel to France, the Mistral boutique aims to transport your senses in the most whimsical way with an elegant selection of sensory-driven items. The tiny store is stocked with a fine collection of authentic French soaps, lotions, candles, perfumes, body and beauty care items, teas, confections, books, and other unique gift items, including artfully crafted kitchen towels and table cloths.

The owner and founder of Mistral, Matthew Tilker, [actually] opened his first location in his mother’s home (as she lovingly likes to remind him), then later opened an official storefront here on Cedros Avenue. While their products are carried in various locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, including a second Mistral boutique in Del Mar, the original boutique in Solana Beach remains the flagship location for the brand.

The store may be quaint, but what it delivers to your senses is anything but diminutive. Mistral boasts its very own line of ambrosial soaps, lotions, fragrances and a precious host of other sensory items for the body and home — these in and of itself could be reason enough to visit the store. Their line of fragrant soaps offers so many scents it makes it hard to choose which one to take home.

Let this descriptor from their website entice you, “The Mistral Soaps are crafted according to a time-honored French soap tradition. Made with a special mélange of natural and organic ingredients and original perfumes from Grasse, France, these quadruple milled bar soaps are super dense, long-lasting, luxurious, gentle and exquisitely fragrant.” But don’t worry, if you simply can’t make a choice you can join their Soap Club, where buying 10 soaps earns you an 11th soap free!

Another line we simply have to mention is their unique line of fragrant items based off of a well-known sensory trip in which travelers are transported to specific regions of France called, “Sur la Route {Provence Roadtrip}.” They even have a special book to compliment this line of products titled, “Le Road Trip”, by Vivian Swift. The exclusive line includes signature Mistral soaps and candles that resonate with a certain region referenced in the trip.

We could honestly go on and on about Mistral, but we hope you’ll make time to visit this special shop for yourself. If you’re not able to visit the Solana Beach location in the Cedros Ave. Design District, you can find them online or check out their other boutique location in Del Mar.

4 Perks to Shopping on Small Business Saturday

Shoes and clothes on shelves at Cedros Soles in Solana Beach

The biggest shopping weekend of the year is only days/hours away. We’re all familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday where the inventory is sky high and the deals are a plenty. As you know, Cedros Avenue is filled with small, local businesses, so the shopping holiday we like to celebrate is Small Business Saturday. Brought about by American Express, the idea behind Small Business Saturday fares well among those who prefer to shop local and support smaller businesses. This concept has been gaining popularity over the years, and it is one that we’re grateful for.

Here are 4 perks to feel good about when shopping on Small Business Saturday:

1. You’re Supporting Local

While you can certainly shop small local businesses anytime and any day you like, Small Business Saturday brings them to the forefront of people’s minds — reminding them to keep their local shopkeepers top of mind when shopping for the holidays. Local shop owners work extra hard to keep their business open because they’re passionate about it. It’s a given that they wear a lot of hats, and deal with the rollercoastering ups and downs of owning a business. But they’re here, working extra hard and helping to maintain a balance of local shops in your town that is likely filled with a sea of major marketplaces. Supporting local businesses gives most of us the warm fuzzies, as supporting local is something to feel truly good about.

2. Avoid a Mass of Crowds

This is a big one. Shopping malls this weekend, and this season for that matter, will be crowded! The parking lots alone can be a ‘not-so-cheery’ debacle to deal with. Local shops are usually in smaller, less crowded areas. The coastal beach towns in North San Diego County alone have a host of quaint little shops to peruse in addition to Cedros Avenue. Even if the areas are a little more crowded than usual during the holiday season, the local vibe is in the air and strolling about town while shopping can feel nostalgic, and perhaps, more festive.

3. Truly Unique Finds

This one is our favorite reason to shop Small Business Saturday! If you’re looking to find some truly unique gifts, shopping small local businesses is the way to go. Smaller businesses pride themselves on selling items that resonate with their brand in a very specific way, and as such a majority of the items they sell are much more rare than what you might find at a larger retailer. At our very own Leaping Lotus and Solo, you’ll find a majority of their items are in fact one-of-a-kind. The extra thought and care you put into the gifts you give can go a long way with the person you’re giving them to.

4. Potential Amex Benefits

For the record, we’re not writing this post as a plug for American Express, but they are the driving force behind the PR and marketing for Small Business Saturday so there are some potential benefits worth mentioning if you have an Amex card and shop with participating local retailers. If you’re an American Express card holder and would like to know which retailers are participating in Small Business Saturday, you can find that information and more here.

Here’s a list of Cedros Avenue retailers that we know, for certain, are participating in Small Business Saturday:

Muttropolis

Jill Courtemanche Millinery

La Femme Chic

There may be others, so be sure to ask the retailer when shopping on Small Business Saturday.

In closing, Cedros Avenue would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We’re so grateful to our local community and to all those that shop with our local retailers — you keep our town of Solana Beach authentic, small, and true to the friendly beach vibe we hope to maintain for many years to come.

6 Reasons to Support Your Local Farmer’s Market

Solana Beach Farmers Market on Cedros Ave

Many of us make the weekly trip to our local farmer’s market to stock up on fresh produce and unique products that can only be found in this special place where it’s truly all about the community we’ve chosen to call, home. The benefits of shopping at your local farmer’s market are indeed plentiful to you, your family, your health, and local community. Benefits we can easily forget in this age where time seems to be less and less, forgiving. Need a refresher to jumpstart the farmers market shopper in you? Here are 6 reasons to (inspire you to) shop your local farmer’s market:

1. Take in the Beauty of the Season with Fresh Flavor and Color

Bunch of purple onions

The produce, foods and other products offered at your local farmer’s market are directly tied to the seasons that surround you. This is a place where the foods that are grown throughout your region are introduced, allowing us to gain an understanding of our natural surroundings and really connect with our own backyard, so to speak. Next time you’re at the farmer’s market, take in the colors all around you, sample the various produce, and take your time to notice what’s available for the season.

2. Pure, Ripe, Taste

Tomatoes Farmers Market

The produce that is sold at the farmer’s market (likely) hasn’t traveled very far to get to you. No sitting in storage. No dealing with the gassing process that inevitably affects the ripening process. This means you’re getting truly fresh produce, at its tastiest, straight from the land that surrounds you! The taste is as pure as it can be because it’s brought straight from a local farm directly to you.

3. Knowing Where Your Food Comes From

Farmers Market Solana Beach

This is a big one with health conscious crowds. Over the past fifty years or so, we’ve relied on highly processed, pre-packaged foods, and the scariest part is that we honestly have no idea where it comes from. Hard hitting documentaries have given us a glimpse, and it’s frightening. At the farmer’s market, you’re given the opportunity to ask questions about where the food that’s presented actually comes from. You’ll find majority of it is truly produced locally. Everything from fruits, veggies, breads, and even eggs and dairy products are grown or created nearby. These individuals care just as much as you do about what goes into their bodies, and moreover they’re passionate about providing clean foods and products to their community.

4. Supporting Your Local Farmers

Farmers Market Jams and Jellies

This one falls right in-line with point number 3. When you start regularly visiting your local farmer’s market, you have an opportunity to get to know the people who are providing all of these fresh foods and products. Ask them questions — what is their name? where are they from? where is their farm located? what else do they grow? what’s the best crop they’ve had this year? what are they excited to bring for the season? Sometimes they even have a website or social media account where you can see what their property looks like. Get to know these people to truly connect with and immerse with your community.

5. Show the Environment You Care

White radish bunch

Shopping at your local farmer’s market is a gentle act to support the preservation of our environment. As with point number 3, much of our food travels a great distance — in the U.S. we’re talking an average of at least 1,500 miles. This amount of travel uses a great deal of natural resources (mostly fossil fuel). We’re so disconnected from not only where it comes from, but how it’s been prepared. In many instances we’ve learned that the preparation and process that much of our food endures is anything BUT eco-friendly. Items at your local farmers market travel much less, and (commonly) go through a much gentler process overall making them more eco-friendly, naturally.

6. Supporting the Humane Treatment of Animals

Brown eggs at farmers market in Solana Beach

Image courtesy of Solana Beach Farmer’s Market

Animal products found at your local farmer’s market such as eggs, cheese, and other dairy products are raised humanely without hormones or antibiotics. Farmers market’s all have different regulations, but the end goal is to provide clean, fresh, and safe foods to the table. Many of these animals are raised on small-ish farms, free to graze naturally on the land and roam openly. If you’re in doubt, ask questions. Your patronage is their livelihood, so they’re willing to answer your questions as openly and honestly as possible.

We can’t promise that every farmer’s market will adhere 100% to the above stated reasons, but regulations for farmer’s market vendors is typically pretty strict. If you’re curious, make sure to contact whomever is in charge with your questions.

If you’re in the area, please come visit the Solana Beach Farmer’s Market on Cedros Ave., every Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. Food court opens at 12pm.

Fall Gardening: Tips and Plants for the Season from Cedros Gardens

Cedros Gardens entrance in Solana Beach

Is your garden looking a bit worn out by the sun? Hot weather during the summer can take a toll on anyone’s garden. Thankfully, Cedros Gardens is a beautiful local nursery, and they have shared some tips to help you get the most out of your gardening for the upcoming season. We asked the owner, Mia, about her recommendations for fall gardening, and she was kind enough to offer some quick insight for this season’s best gardening practices.

Keep Your Garden Lush & Colorful

You can continue to plant tropical and semi-tropical plants during the fall. With the warm southern California climate, these easy-growing plants are a great option to feel like a gardening expert. Plants such as Citrus Trees, Bougainvillea, Bird of Paradise and Passion Fruits grow very quickly, so you can enjoy the fruits of your minimal labor.

Plant early blooming Sweetpea seeds near the end of September, and they will bloom right around Christmas time. These colorful flowers will brighten up your garden as you entertain visitors during the holiday season.

Grow Your Own Vegetables

For those who enjoy growing your own vegetables, the first month of fall is a great opportunity to plant from the Brasicca family. This includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale from seeds. This time of year is also an excellent time to plant onions and sugar snap peas. Growing your own vegetables can save you both time and money, plus the added satisfaction of cultivating your own delicious food.

Healthy Plants Are Happy Plants

Fall is a perfect opportunity to plant some drought tolerant plants, and get rid of those thirsty plants! Consider planting California native plants, like Flannelbush or the signature California Poppy. Plants native to Australia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean also do well when planted in the early fall. Additionally, if you remove the lawn from your home, you might be eligible for some rebates through San Diego County’s incentive program, designed to combat the drought.

Mia also points out that for all of your gardening, amending the soil is a must. Healthy soil will stay moist with less water (believe it or not!), helping your plants to thrive with less water. You can add finished compost, raw organic matter, and organic nutrients to your soil to help it retain the water and nutrients.

If you need some expert advice or some new additions for your garden, come by Cedros Gardens in Solana Beach. Stop by on a Sunday to catch the Solana Beach Farmer’s Market as well! Cedros Gardens is located at 330 S Cedros Ave Solana Beach, CA 92075 (Corner of Cedros & Rosa), open Monday – Saturday 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. &  Sunday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m.
