Ankle Booties – These definitely create a look that works for everyone, as they work with pretty much any outfit! Open-toed ankle booties are especially making an appearance. However, you can’t go wrong with closed-toed booties either. Both options are a great way to spice up any casual look. Check out Pink Lagoon for some stylish options!

Florals – Florals are a big trend this season! A range of pretty flower patterns are showing up on any piece of apparel from shirts and dresses to leggings and even jeans — and we’re not complaining. It’s a great way to add color to a simple look!

Ruffles – Remember when ruffles were your favorite part of clothing when you were young? Well, it’s about time we bring back the fun style this look creates. One or two strips of ruffles can be just enough to accomplish this trendy look.

Off-the-shoulder – Everyone’s favorite 70s trend is making a strong comeback. Off-the-shoulder shirts and dresses create a fashionable look while showing off the perfect amount of skin. We especially love this one because it puts a little “party” in any outfit!

Chokers – Yes, the choker is back… but it’s more chic and stylish than ever. How could we not throw this one in the mix? From simple and sleek to stringy and hip, chokers are a great addition to any fall outfit.

Hats – The fall season brings in the best accessory: hats. Whether you’re one to rock floppy hats or flat brimmed hats, the time has come to spruce up your fall outfits with this essential add-on. Cedros Soles has trendy hats and so much more!

Choosing the right outfit for festivals like KAABOO is oftentimes one of the most important factors in getting ready for the event. Included in this list are blankets, beach towels, small backpacks, and empty water bottles. These are all nifty things that you may not have known you could bring into the venue with you! So before making a trip for outfits and accessories, take a look at what else you may need and add those essentials to your Cedros shopping list. If you’re worried about hauling these extra things around during the weekend, KAABOO has your back with lockers available — with the option to rent them out overnight!

You can’t go wrong in avoiding traffic and surges by sticking with public transportation — especially if you’re looking to go green. North County Transit District (NCTD) and Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) offer unlimited rides a day with the RegionPlus Day Pass for only $12 each day. The pass includes access to the NCTD Coaster, Sprinter, Breeze, as well as the MTS Trolley Lines, buses, and Rapid Express buses (not including Rural routes and Access services). If the RegionPlus Day Pass sounds like the perfect option for you, visit the following websites for more details: GoNCTD.com and sdmts.com.

The Solana Beach Train Station is the closest stop to KAABOO and provides a shuttle to and from the main gates of the venue for $5 each way. Here’s the best part: if you’ve got some spare time while waiting for the shuttle going to the event or the train going home, what better way to let time pass than with a pint of beer, glass of wine, or a bite to eat? Right across the street from the station here on Cedros are some perfect spots to visit while waiting on shuttles and trains! Beer lovers can find tasty beverages at Culture Brewing Co., while wine lovers can find them at Carruth Cellars. Those looking to fill an empty stomach can walk down to the bistro style Wild Note Cafe.

Enjoying the Ride

KAABOO will be here in no time, and the best you can do is know that you prepped like a champ. All that’s left is to enjoy each and every moment of the weekend — whether you’re there to see big headliners, up-and-coming performers, nationally recognized comedians, culinary experts, or artwork from a range of public artists. KAABOO Del Mar is all about the experience, so get familiar with all they have to offer to ensure you will get the most out of it!

Summer Style: Flattering Swimsuits to Inspire and More!

It’s time to say goodbye to June Gloom and hello to summer sunshine. The sun is coming in hot, and we all know what comes along with it — beach days and swimwear! Whether you’re sticking around in the SoCal sunshine or planning trips to other sunny summer spots, weekends and holidays should be spent soaking up the sun at the beach or by the pool. As foyellow bikinir the ultimate summer necessity, be sure to make a little time to shop for the perfect swimsuit.

Don’t be afraid to show some skin and bring style to the sand with confidence. Swimwear has come a long way over the years — and it’s a beautiful thing. Finding what complements your shape and style has never been easier. It’s not a bad problem to have when the toughest part is choosing from a number of trending styles! To help get you started, here are a few that are killing the swimsuit game so far in 2016:

High-waisted Two Piece

We’re excited to share that this retro-style is coming on the scene faster than ever, ladies. Right alongside your high-waisted pants and shorts, the high-wasted bikini has returned by popular demand. Whether it’s cut out with strappy sides, shaped with sheer mesh, or solid and bold, the look itself has a variety of styles that can flatter any body type. If you think the high-waisted look is just not your thing, think again and you may find something that works for you!

Mix and Matchbright dummer bikini

While most assume this refers to different suits that complement each other in colors and patterns, the mix and match style is now catering to size and shape as well. When it comes to mixing and matching by color and pattern, you essentially have the power to turn two bathing suits into four — and who wouldn’t want to take advantage of that? For those of us who require a different size bottom versus top, saving money is where it’s at. Retailers have come to realize the necessity of selling bathing suit pieces separately, hallelujah! Some shops even specifically target those who need to mix their sizes. For example, take a look at this small boutique here on Cedros Ave. that has a variety of swimsuits, Strawberry Intimates. So whether you’re aiming to rock different suits in multiple configurations or looking to accommodate and support your particular body type, the mix and match style is a great 2016 trend for inspiration.

One-Piece Wonders
To go along with our theme, the one-piece is another look that presents a number of style varieties ranging from slitted and sexy to simplistic and chic. It’s a timeless and classy style that won’t be leaving us anytime soon. You may be looking for either flirty spice or for elegant coverage, but don’t hesitate to give both a try. You never know what may surprisingly show you off best! While browsing the numerous styles, one-piece shoppers will come across ‘Baywatch’ high hipbone cuts, extremely low backs, and cut-out sides — all made from many different materials. It’s looking like the latest   monokini versions (which might as well be a two-piece type of one-piece) are especially becoming a favorite 2016 summer choice.

Complementary Essentials

A to Z Things to Do on Cedros Avenue (S through Z)

Collage of 3 businesses located on Cedros Ave. in Solana Beach

And we’re on to part three of our “A to Z Things to Do on Cedros Avenue.” This final segment will focus on letters S through Z. We’re not going to lie, some of these letters were tough! If you’ve ever played the alphabet game or Scattergories, you know what we’re talking about.

Summertime is officially here and we couldn’t be more excited! To live in this gorgeous community is such a privilege and there’s no time like summer to showcase exactly why. Long sunny days with warm beach sunsets (after 8pm) are so lovely here in San Diego. The extended daylight hours simply beg for us to take in more sights, more activities, and more quality time with friends and family. So take-in this final list of fun to-do’s on Cedros Ave.

S –  Stroll into Solo if you’re looking for a truly unique gift, an off-beat greeting card or stationery, funky-chic housewares, a great art or travel book, or simply to simply take in the artistic splendor of what’s on display in this extraordinary warehouse shopping space.

T – Transcendent style can be easily found and marvelled in Tucci Boutique. Owner and fashion cognoscente, Jessica Agatucci, brings a clean and timeless sense of vogue to the clothing and accessory collection housed within her special boutiques.

U – Unique finds of the rustic-chic kind can be found in a sweet little shop located at the south end of Cedros called, Brick Lane. Think luxurious, yet non-fussy Anthropologie-esque fabrics juxtaposed with a collection of handmade local jewelry, antique wooden spools, and housewares that boast a homespun European vibe.

V – Visions of Gold Fine Jewelry is a must for anyone who appreciates elegance and glimmer. The collection of jewelry is curated beautifully and presents an enticing display of sophistication. If you’re in need of someone to design that special…ehem…ring, the owner and designer, Scott, is your guy!

W – Weeds is another one of our favorite clothing stores on the street. They specialize in comfortable, casual clothing that helps each woman create her own style.  We love them because they carry natural fiber clothing made in the U.S. and Europe. If you are looking for clothing with great quality and even better style, look no further!

X – Xenial is the word that comes to mind when we think of our friends at Lofty Coffee Company. Not only is their selection of fine coffee, teas, food and pastries exquisite (yes we said exquisite when referring to coffee – it’s THAT good!) but their staff is a vibrant and happy bunch that show all of their customers the utmost when it comes to friendliness and hospitality. If you become a regular, trust us, they’ll start greeting you by name.

Y – Yummy breakfast and lunch anyone? Head on over to Lockwood Table Cafe! Tucked into the back corner one of our tiny strip of shops at the south end, you’ll find this sweet little neighborhood eatery offering a satiating menu of savory and sweet bites. It’s the perfect little spot to meet up with with friends.

Z – Zigzagging about Cedros is an easy thing to do. Yes, we were reaching a bit with that one – haha! But seriously, it is! Many of our visitors will randomly hop from one shop or cafe to the next, then loop back and forth again and again. It happens when you’re surrounded by such a unique collection of local storefronts and eateries that Cedros Ave. has to offer.

So come on over and visit us for some retail therapy, gift shopping, or just to stroll the street and be inspired!

Take the Train to Solana Beach

Solana Beach Train Station

As we’re all aware, taking advantage of public transit systems has a much lower impact on the environment but in Southern California, we rarely utilize it. For the record, we get it! We live in a busy world where time is precious, and the extra time we’d need to factor into our routine just to get to and from a public transportation station just may not be realistic in your world on the daily.

If you’re a regular public transit user, hats off to you! But for those of us who aren’t (and we’re not judging), take note that public transportation can be utilized occasionally for day trips with family and friends, as well — and the Solana Beach Transit Center is a great stop if you’re planning a visit to coastal North San Diego County. Just an FYI that the Solana Beach Transit Station services Amtrak California’s Pacific Surfliner passenger train, and North County Transit District’s Coaster commuter rail.

Here are 3 reasons to consider taking the train to Solana Beach:

Avoid Traffic

Special events are always happening at the Del Mar Racetrack and taking the train is a smart way to avoid the dreaded traffic of the I-5 Freeway. This is especially true during the summer when kids are out of school and out-of-town tourism is at its peak.

For Summer Events at the Fairgrounds

Planning to visit the San Diego County Fair or attend the horse races this year? These are both stellar reasons to take the train to the Solana Beach station. The fairgrounds are really close by, and during the fair and race season, there are buses and shuttles ready to take you to and from your destination. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get to ride one of the double-decker buses! Scheduling an Uber or a Lyft is another option if you plan to head into downtown Del Mar for more sight-seeing. Also, if you’re planning to drink, utilizing public transportation is the way to go.

You Can Bring Your Bike!

Did you know that Amtrak now allows bikes? Yep! If you’re looking to spend the day in North County, soaking up the sun on our tranquil coastline, why not bring your own bike? Ride along Cedros Ave., have lunch at a local cafe, do a little boutique shopping, then cruise on over to Fletcher Cove Park, which also overlooks the beautiful Pillbox beach. Both Amtrak and the Coaster allow bikes. Just make sure you follow their policies.

We’re not so good at explaining math, so we’ll let you see how this equation works out in the graphic below.

4 Home Decor Trends We LOVE for 2016

If you’re a regular Cedros Avenue shopper, you’re aware of the awesome home decor shopping selection we have. There are so many, in fact, it’s hard NOT to shop for a little something new every season to complement your interior space. Home decor is an extension of fashion, and as such, at times you’ll only need a new accessory or two (a new lamp or fabulous rug), or you’ll need an entirely new outfit for a specific room (example: fabulous bedding with a plethora of matching pillows). Hey, there’s nothing wrong with livening up your living space — it’s your sanctuary! With that in mind, we thought it might be fun to share a few of the 2016 Houzz home decorating trends that we found inspiring, and hope you will too.

Formal Dining Room Spaces

Farmhouse Dining Room

We love that this trend has come back into focus. Formal dining rooms fell by the wayside in recent decades due to the hustle and bustle that is just, life. But in recent years, we’ve finally come full circle back to actually needing to connect with one another, and what better way to do that than around the dinner table? No longer reserved for holidays exclusively, formal dining rooms have finally become a nightly gathering space for many families. But they’ve morphed with the times into being more functional and ideal for regular daily use, such as reclaimed farm tables mixed stylishly with benches and coordinating seating. And if you need some accessories, head on over the Bixby & Ball to outfit your dining abode.

Statement Mirrors…in Bathrooms!

This is such a great usage of framed mirrors. More and more we’re seeing bathrooms that are utilizing beautiful statement mirrors in place of single-paned reflectors that span an entire wall. You can get really creative with this style! We’ve seen everything from large mirrors with bold, antique wood frames, to a mixture of smaller more simplistic mirrors to complement a bathroom space. Love this trend? Cokas Diko and Solo are great places to hunt for statement mirrors.

Outdoor Fabrics Used Indoors

Houzz Image Outdoor Fabric Used Indoor

How fun and smart is this?! If you have a family that includes animals, this is a fantastic idea. Outdoor fabrics are sturdy and meant to not only withstand outdoor weather conditions but are easy to clean. Both big time bonus points if you have a dog (or 2 or 3) that come bounding about on your couches after a long day at the beach or after a trail run. Whether you’re in need of sturdier fabrics or not, the other bonus to this trend is versatility. Outdoor fabrics present a slightly different feel and also offer bolder patterns and color choices. We’re seeing this trend translate minimally with throw pillows and dining chair seats, but also on a grander level with couches and lounge chairs. So if you see an outdoor pillow you love, keep in mind that it could still be an option to compliment a love seat for a pop of color this spring and summer.

Tech Free Living Rooms

Along the lines of the above-mentioned formal dining space trend, is that need to gather face-to-face and connect with one another. Living spaces that omit all technology screens are on the rise (aka no T.V.) and for good reason. Going back to basics, these spaces are meant for good conversation and maybe even family game nights (Scrabble anyone?). The point here is to create a space that allows us to connect with the people in our lives. Even if you’re craving a solitary evening to yourself, what better way to unwind than with a good book, a glass of wine, and some silence? Replacing televisions with artwork or a featured gallery wall of family photos is a trend to get on board with. We need to get back to the basics of human interaction and relationships. And hey, it’s ok if your book is on a tablet device. But turn that mobile phone on silent!

Celebrate the Love ALL Around You This Valentine’s Day

Heart hands at sunset

It’s hard to believe that we’re a month into 2016! Heading into February, we’re faced with all things pink, red and heart shaped. Yep, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For some, this holiday isn’t their favorite based on the notion that it’s a day celebrated exclusively by couples. Sorry, not sorry…but that’s a bit of an old school notion, don’t you think? We are in the 21st century after all, and traditions are morphing and changing in ways that meld old with the new.

With that in mind, we’re just going to put it out there that we think Valentine’s Day could (and should) be celebrated by everyone because love is all around us. Whether it’s with friend’s, family, and even pets, Valentine’s Day can be celebrated as a special day when we honor the love we’re all so fortunate to have in our lives. We’ll even go so far as to say that perhaps a little self-love is in order if you’re in need of treating yourself to some much-needed pampering, relaxation or a perhaps a little retail therapy. You get the idea!

Here are some ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the love that surrounds you:

With Friends

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with friends can make for a cherished memory, and perhaps tradition, for years to come. Whether it be with one close friend, or with a group, the possibilities of ‘what to do’ is endless. If you’re attached and planning an evening with your significant other, you could organize a coffee or lunch date with friends. If you’re not attached, plan a fun night out (or in). Some ideas might be to take in a concert at a local venue with dinner and cocktails beforehand, or plan a shopping day with your favorite girls. If you have a bestie who’s really been there for you this past year, a unique gift from a local boutique might be a nice token to show how appreciative you are of her friendship. We’ll just throw out there that some of the boutiques on Cedros Ave. have some beautiful gifts to choose from for such a purpose. Stroll into Cedros Soles, or The Antique Warehouse and you’ll see what we’re talking about. Once again, though, if you’re attached, it’s still nice to give a loving gift to a friend who means a great deal to you. Especially if they’ve recently become single, this may be a tough time where a little token of love from a friend goes a long way.

With Family

Who loves you more than your family?! These are some of THE best people to celebrate Valentine’s day with. It falls on a Sunday this year, so why not plan a family breakfast at a nearby cafe such as Lockwood Table? If weather permits, you could take a nice walk to your favorite park for some much needed time together. Make sure to take photos! Time together with family is a cherished moment that should be captured. Group family selfies are highly encouraged here. Just sayin!

With Your Pets

The love of a pet is one of the purest we’ll ever experience. Even if you’re attached or have plans with friends on Valentine’s Day, give your pets a little extra love to show your gratitude for the happiness they bring to your life. If you live in North San Diego County, we recommend visiting our friends at Muttropolis to pick up something for your furry family member. Nothing says I love you to the furballs like an extra yummy treat or a new toy.

With YOU

Celebrating YOU is a loving act that we rarely take the time to do. We’re often so busy with work, school and other responsibilities we sometimes forget to stop and celebrate the life we’ve created for ourselves. Even if you’re not in the best place in your life, it’s important to give yourself a little hug now and then to stay in a positive frame of mind. Celebrate all that you are, the lessons you’ve learned, how far you’ve come, what you’ve accomplished and your overall journey. Send a Valentine’s message to yourself – whether it’s one of encouragement or a boost of self-confidence. Choose to do something that makes you truly happy. A walk on the beach. Treating yourself to that perfect purse or necklace you’ve been eyeing. Getting pampered for the day at your favorite salon. Or simply taking some time away from the day-to-day to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and a good book.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Will you do any shopping on Cedros Ave. for friends, family or loved ones? Where will you shop? Share your ideas and thoughts with us on our Facebook page!

Retail Therapy: Time to Do a Little Shopping…For You!

"I like to start my Christmas shopping the day after Christmas" meme

The holidays may be coming to a close but the shopping bug still continues in many of us, somehow. Our browsing gaze shifts from gift giving mode to focusing on things we may need or want for ourselves — perhaps because we’ve gotten some gift cards or certificates to our favorite store, or maybe we just want to take advantage of all the enticing after Christmas deals. Whatever your motivation, indulging in some post holiday retail therapy can provide a much needed release just before the new year hits and we settle back into our usual life patterns. Here are 3 reasons to surrender to the post holiday shopping bug and just enjoy yourself:

Shopping Can (And Should Be) Fun!

Let’s just cut to the chase with our first point and say that shopping for things your little heart desires can be pretty darn fun. It’s a different experience than shopping for things you need, like groceries or household cleaning items. Doing something just for you is therapeutic, especially if you’re a hardworking giving-type who rarely thinks of his or herself. Slipping on just the right pair of boots, or sitting in that exquisite armchair that becomes a ‘must-have’ for your living room can be an exhilarating experience that ignites excitement and best of all, puts a smile on your face.

Shopping Can Be a Welcome Distraction

Sometimes we just need a little distraction and shopping can provide a welcome escape. Browsing in and out of shops allows our minds to release and focus on what is directly in front of us. Whether it’s clothing, shoes, furniture or home goods, jewelry, artwork, cosmetics, kitchenware, or even smell good items such as oils and body care products, our sensories are called to attention to see, smell, touch and feel what’s directly in front of us. This provides a welcome distraction from the hustle and bustle of our day-to-day lives. Oftentimes we ruminate over problems that we’re dealing with, and while shopping won’t make them go away it can allow us to step away from the perpetual thoughts (for a moment) so we can come back to them with a fresh perspective. Who knows, maybe a solution to a particular issue will present itself along the way!

Shopping Can Create Social Connection

Some of us are solitary shoppers, others prefer to have a buddy or two along for the experience. Whatever your shopping style is, shopping does create a social connection that can be energetically therapeutic.

If you’re an independent shopper (preferring to go solo) you’re still interacting with the associates of the store while browsing or during checkout. Solo shoppers tend to drift into their own world, which can be a welcome release in and of itself but there’s still a sense of social interaction that happens around them.

Having a friend or two with you while shopping can be some of the best therapy of all. Having someone there to bounce ideas off of, offer advice, or chat mindlessly, is a great way to spend some free time. For women specifically, ‘girlfriend time’ has been likened to the benefits of physical exercise because it releases the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter, serotonin, which combats depression and creates an overall sense of well-being.

So if you’re feeling a little post-holiday retail therapy, just give in and let the good vibes take over!

4 Perks to Shopping on Small Business Saturday

Shoes and clothes on shelves at Cedros Soles in Solana Beach

The biggest shopping weekend of the year is only days/hours away. We’re all familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday where the inventory is sky high and the deals are a plenty. As you know, Cedros Avenue is filled with small, local businesses, so the shopping holiday we like to celebrate is Small Business Saturday. Brought about by American Express, the idea behind Small Business Saturday fares well among those who prefer to shop local and support smaller businesses. This concept has been gaining popularity over the years, and it is one that we’re grateful for.

Here are 4 perks to feel good about when shopping on Small Business Saturday:

1. You’re Supporting Local

While you can certainly shop small local businesses anytime and any day you like, Small Business Saturday brings them to the forefront of people’s minds — reminding them to keep their local shopkeepers top of mind when shopping for the holidays. Local shop owners work extra hard to keep their business open because they’re passionate about it. It’s a given that they wear a lot of hats, and deal with the rollercoastering ups and downs of owning a business. But they’re here, working extra hard and helping to maintain a balance of local shops in your town that is likely filled with a sea of major marketplaces. Supporting local businesses gives most of us the warm fuzzies, as supporting local is something to feel truly good about.

2. Avoid a Mass of Crowds

This is a big one. Shopping malls this weekend, and this season for that matter, will be crowded! The parking lots alone can be a ‘not-so-cheery’ debacle to deal with. Local shops are usually in smaller, less crowded areas. The coastal beach towns in North San Diego County alone have a host of quaint little shops to peruse in addition to Cedros Avenue. Even if the areas are a little more crowded than usual during the holiday season, the local vibe is in the air and strolling about town while shopping can feel nostalgic, and perhaps, more festive.

3. Truly Unique Finds

This one is our favorite reason to shop Small Business Saturday! If you’re looking to find some truly unique gifts, shopping small local businesses is the way to go. Smaller businesses pride themselves on selling items that resonate with their brand in a very specific way, and as such a majority of the items they sell are much more rare than what you might find at a larger retailer. At our very own Leaping Lotus and Solo, you’ll find a majority of their items are in fact one-of-a-kind. The extra thought and care you put into the gifts you give can go a long way with the person you’re giving them to.

4. Potential Amex Benefits

For the record, we’re not writing this post as a plug for American Express, but they are the driving force behind the PR and marketing for Small Business Saturday so there are some potential benefits worth mentioning if you have an Amex card and shop with participating local retailers. If you’re an American Express card holder and would like to know which retailers are participating in Small Business Saturday, you can find that information and more here.

Here’s a list of Cedros Avenue retailers that we know, for certain, are participating in Small Business Saturday:

Muttropolis

Jill Courtemanche Millinery

La Femme Chic

There may be others, so be sure to ask the retailer when shopping on Small Business Saturday.

In closing, Cedros Avenue would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We’re so grateful to our local community and to all those that shop with our local retailers — you keep our town of Solana Beach authentic, small, and true to the friendly beach vibe we hope to maintain for many years to come.

Discover Antique Holiday Shopping in Solana Beach

Antique Warehouse Cedros Ave

If you love all things antiquated, then add a regular trip the The Antique Warehouse in Solana Beach to your list of antique shops.

From the street their warehouse seems fairly sizable, with ample parking to boot. Then you step inside and take a moment to wonder at the rows upon rows of vintage treasures that would give any antique lover a rush of excitement. From jewelry, to postcards, furniture, paintings, vinyl records, books, kitchen gadgets, pottery, and more than we could ever list here, they’ve got it all.

Antique Warehouse Solana Beach

Antique Warehouse Solana Beach Inside

What we love about The Antique Warehouse is how well merchandised it is. This is what really sets it apart in the antique shopping world. The vendors and dealers who showcase their found treasures take pride in the display of the items they have for sale. This makes it so much easier to shop, because the sea of treasures is vast and easy to get lost in. Their staff is extremely friendly and always willing to help you find what you’re looking for. Another perk, certain vendors often have little sales. All the more reason to add this antique shop to the regular visit list.

But let’s get down to our focus for this blog…holiday shopping! Whether you’re getting ready to shop for the upcoming holidays for old-timey gifts that your loved ones might appreciate, or even hoping to add to your collection of fall and winter holiday decor, The Antique Warehouse will deliver, especially as we get deeper into the coming seasons.

Halloween Ornaments and Perhaps Even a Costume

How could you not love Halloween? And what’s Halloween without a dose of vintage? As time goes on, our memories of this holiday accumulate with days of when…when we were young, when we went trick-or-treating, when we won that costume contest. We look back in time, back to the old and perhaps even the spooky. The Antique Warehouse has started showcasing their Hallowe’en spirit with some fun displays that meld old with the new. The merchandise below can be found toward the back of the warehouse.

Vintage Halloween Deocrations

And don’t forget your Halloween costume! Go vintage for a truly unique flare to your disguise. There are several booths that house a treasure of throwback apparel, from the dapper to a dazzling retro.

The Antique Warehouse vendors have also started sprinkling in their Christmas accoutrement. Many of these finds truly are intrinsic gems of yesteryear. Aged glass ornaments might be some of our favorites. The colors are still so vibrant but with cracks and imperfections that make you wonder how far they’ve traveled and how many holidays they’ve seen. There are old holiday children’s books, Bing Crosby records, and vintage ceramic trees. All makings of the perfect back in the day holiday!

Fall Gardening: Tips and Plants for the Season from Cedros Gardens

Cedros Gardens entrance in Solana Beach

Is your garden looking a bit worn out by the sun? Hot weather during the summer can take a toll on anyone’s garden. Thankfully, Cedros Gardens is a beautiful local nursery, and they have shared some tips to help you get the most out of your gardening for the upcoming season. We asked the owner, Mia, about her recommendations for fall gardening, and she was kind enough to offer some quick insight for this season’s best gardening practices.

Keep Your Garden Lush & Colorful

You can continue to plant tropical and semi-tropical plants during the fall. With the warm southern California climate, these easy-growing plants are a great option to feel like a gardening expert. Plants such as Citrus Trees, Bougainvillea, Bird of Paradise and Passion Fruits grow very quickly, so you can enjoy the fruits of your minimal labor.

Plant early blooming Sweetpea seeds near the end of September, and they will bloom right around Christmas time. These colorful flowers will brighten up your garden as you entertain visitors during the holiday season.

Grow Your Own Vegetables

For those who enjoy growing your own vegetables, the first month of fall is a great opportunity to plant from the Brasicca family. This includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale from seeds. This time of year is also an excellent time to plant onions and sugar snap peas. Growing your own vegetables can save you both time and money, plus the added satisfaction of cultivating your own delicious food.

Healthy Plants Are Happy Plants

Fall is a perfect opportunity to plant some drought tolerant plants, and get rid of those thirsty plants! Consider planting California native plants, like Flannelbush or the signature California Poppy. Plants native to Australia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean also do well when planted in the early fall. Additionally, if you remove the lawn from your home, you might be eligible for some rebates through San Diego County’s incentive program, designed to combat the drought.

Mia also points out that for all of your gardening, amending the soil is a must. Healthy soil will stay moist with less water (believe it or not!), helping your plants to thrive with less water. You can add finished compost, raw organic matter, and organic nutrients to your soil to help it retain the water and nutrients.

If you need some expert advice or some new additions for your garden, come by Cedros Gardens in Solana Beach. Stop by on a Sunday to catch the Solana Beach Farmer’s Market as well! Cedros Gardens is located at 330 S Cedros Ave Solana Beach, CA 92075 (Corner of Cedros & Rosa), open Monday – Saturday 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. &  Sunday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m.

At one time or another, we’ve all experienced that feeling of burnout. You continuously work hard, and it’s important to give yourself time to bounce back. Studies have shown that taking a mental health day away from work can increase productivity and creativity. Your career should be treated like a marathon rather than a sprint, so take the time to care for yourself and establish that work-life balance.

If you are going to take a mental health day (and happen to live in San Diego!), keep the Cedros Ave. Design District in mind. Our unique street offers a variety of unique shops, boutiques, eateries, and little pampering havens perfect for that much needed mental health day!

On your next day off, head over to Do’s & Lipstick to give your hair some TLC. Offering styling, color, and treatments to nourish those beautiful locks Do’s and Lipstick offers everything you need to rejuvenate your hair. Enjoy Your Food, Enjoy Your Life

We’ve all had those sad desk lunches in front of our computers, simultaneously trying to scarf down leftovers and respond to those pressing emails. When you’re away from work, take the time to sit down and enjoy a meal (or even better, a glass of wine!). The Lockwood Table Café is a tranquilly ambient and quaint little cafe serving up a savory selection of artisan-style meals and sweet treats. Many of their accompaniments such as dressings, and sauces are housemade – which locals LOVE! As a favorite among many Cedros Merchants, this cafe offers more than an amazing meal; their patio seating is perfect for soaking up that California Sun while you enjoy their highly recommended breakfast and lunch specials.
