4 Reasons to Visit the SD Fair This 2016

Summer is literally around the corner and some of our favorite local events have already kicked off to get us into the true spirit of the season. One of those events, and probably the biggest, is the San Diego County Fair. This traditional annual event draws in thousands of San Diegans and SoCal visitors over a span of 26 fun-filled days. Games, prizes, exhibits, concerts, art, photography, crafts, gardens, vendors, sinfully delicious fried foods (yes, they have deep fried everything) and carnival inspired rides that light up the summer night sky. It’s a bit overly indulgent, and maybe just a little gaudy, but that’s what makes it so much fun!

Oh! And did we mention the theme this year? “Mad About the Fair”, which is an ode to that whimsical classic C.S. Lewis tale, we all know and love, “Alice in Wonderland.” How fun is that?!

Everyone will have different reasons for visiting the fair this year, but here are 4 standout reasons we think you consider attending. Don’t worry, they’re much classier than you might think. [Wink]

#1 – The Concerts

The SD Fair draws in quite a musical line-up. And we’re talking on more than just the main Heineken Grandstand Stage, which is noteworthy with the Toyota Summer Concert Series featuring artists such as 3 Doors Down, Grand Funk Railroad, Kenny Rogers, Los Tigres Del Norte, Kool and the Gang, Hailee Steinfeld and Charlie Puth, just to name a few. But as we mentioned, there are other stages throughout the fair that will feature a fantastic line-up of bands and entertainment that are worth checking out. In fact, our very own Belly Up Tavern will be hosting their own line-up entitled the “Belly Up Music Festival” at the Coors Light Rock On Stage. For a list of who will be there this year check out the Concerts and Entertainment page.

#2 – Tea Time in Wonderland

This one may fly under the radar, but we’re mentioning it here to see that it doesn’t go unnoticed. Every Sunday, at 11AM or 1PM at Sprigs & Spirits in the Paul Ecke Jr. Garden Show, you can enjoy sipping on tea in a proper Wonderland-esque ceremony and make a special hat of your very own with the guidance of Charity Wings Art & Craft Center – a very special local art center located in the neighboring town of San Marcos. The menu is tea party worthy and sure to please. You can even make it a “Tipsy Tea” time with bottomless champagne cocktails for an added fee. Want more info on ticket rates for this special event? #3 – Farm to Table Dinner

The phrase “eat and dine” local is a rapidly growing concept worldwide and for good reason. We’re getting back to our roots. Looking to neighborly farmers to supply us with locally grown food, and provide us with the much-needed education and experiences to help us obtain a more sustainable and healthier lifestyle. At this special event, you’ll get to dine with local farmers, noshing on a five-course meal paired with award-winning beer and wine. For more info, click here. Date for this event is Saturday, July 2nd from 4:30PM to 7PM.

#4 – Whole Life Festival

Lastly, and in the same vein as event #3, is the Whole Life Festival (formerly Enviro Fair). The special event is FREE with your fair admission. You’ll get to mingle and chat with local farmers; explore an eco-friendly marketplace filled with products and services for the mind; body & soul; hear guest speakers or watch demonstrations; connect with and discover holistic approaches to a healthier lifestyle. There’s a whole line-up of health-centric events planned from Bhakti Yoga, feng shui talks, chakra balancing, fitness and nutrition, and even a little wine tasting. We think this one is a must! For more info click here! Date for this all day event is Saturday, July 2nd from 10AM to 5PM.

We can honestly think of quite a few more reasons to visit the San Diego County Fair this 2016. Many chalk the fair up to fried foods, and risky rides. While these are certainly prevalent, as you can see from above, if you do a little digging you can discover some gem-of-events that don’t make your stomach literally turn. So we urge you to venture down the rabbit hole and explore their website for something that tickles your fancy.

Oh! And one last thing — if you plan to take the train or bus into the Solana Beach Coaster station here on Cedros Ave., you can use your pass to board a shuttle from the station that will take you directly to the fairground’s west gate. Please note that you must have a valid Amtrak ticket or North County Transit District ticket or pass to board the shuttle.
